Festival Taster: Troy Kingi with Delaney Davidson - Black Sea, Golden Ladder

Toitoi Event Pic 670 x 410px Troy Delaney New Image

We are kicking off the 2022 Hawke's Bay Arts Festival with some Festival taster sessions in July and August, of which this show is one.

Troy Kingi (Te Arawa, Ngāpuhi) is halfway through his 10 10 10 Series: 10 albums, 10 genres, 10 years. Following 2020’s remarkable performance of The Ghost of Freddie César at the Hawke's Bay Arts Festival, Kingi swaps out his soul-styling for folk twang and twelve strings on Black Sea Golden Ladder.

Co-produced and performing with award-winning Ōtautahi folk/country stalwart Delaney Davidson, Kingi says "It is the most personal of all my albums – the first one I feel that is truly about me". Each track dives deep into a different part of life, from birth to death, with lead single Call My Name unearthing school day memories, written by Davidson, Kingi and Kingi's daughter.

Black Sea, Golden Ladder was collaboratively written and recorded as part of the Matairangi Mahi Toi Artist Residency in Wellington - established in 2016 to encourage and promote the development of Māori and Pasifika visual arts and creative practices.

Come experience the dual creative magic of Troy Kingi and Delaney Davidson live!

"Troy's contribution to shaping New Zealand sound and music has been hugely significant and influential." - Stuff

This show runs for 120 minutes, including interval.
