Last Dance, First Dance is a nationwide search to find people who danced on the Municipal Building Assembly Hall between 1950-2014. After being closed for eight long years due to earthquake strengthening, the Municipal Building is finally ready to welcome people back in with excitement. What better way to mark this momentous occasion than inviting dancers from days gone by to kick up their heels on the original sprung dancefloor?!
Wedding dances, school balls, rock ‘n’ roll, ballet recitals, 21st birthdays - whatever the occasion, if you have danced in the Assembly Hall from 1950-2014, then share your memories for the chance to join us for the “first dance” on Opening Weekend.
Winners will join us for the Toitoi Municipal Building’s “first dance”. The Hawke’s Bay Jazz Club Big Band will be on stage, playing all the classics for you to dance to. Take your own steps or follow along with dance instructor, Nerida Cortese.
Spot prizes for “best dancers” and “best dressed”. Free entry, all welcome, no booking required.
About Nerida Cortese
Dancing professionally for over 30 years, Nerida is probably most recognisable to Kiwis for her television appearances on Dancing with the Stars, Battle of the Ballroom and So You Think You Can Dance. In addition to her dancing, producing and choreographing, Nerida is also an Instagram star thanks to her fun dance tutorials she performs with her son Jett.
