We're so excited to welcome you and your ākonga to Lift Off Festival's schools programme, from April 8 to 12. Below you'll find information about every activity and opportunity available to your ākonga. Or you can see the whole week's timetable here.

Theatre Shows

The Messy Magic Adventure - with Rollicking Entertainment

 

Age: Years 1-8
Dates: April 8-10
Duration: 50 mins
Cost: $8pp

Spray and Wipe are two cleaners, who have been hired for their most exciting job ever - cleaning a magician's house! But when they accidentally let the magic out of its box, everything is turned topsy-turvy! A delightfully playful production.

Flutter with Stringbean Puppets

Flutter - with Stringbean Puppets

Age: Kindy - Year 6
Dates: April 12, 10am and 11.30am

Duration: 30 mins
Cost: $8pp

A short-tailed bat, who is afraid of the dark, is befriended by a sparkly star-loving glow worm. This show is about overcoming your fears, while also highlighting some of Aotearoa's unique flora and fauna and the threats they face.


Interactive workshops and experiences

Creative Movement Workshop - with Rollicking Entertainment

Age: All ages
Dates: Apr 8-10, 12.30pm

Duration: 45 mins
Cost: $4pp

Join Lizzie and Dave from The Messy Magic Adventure for a super-fun taster workshop, covering physical theatre, mime, balance, ensemble, and creative silliness. With no scripts or lines to learn, this workshop is great for groups with ESOL students or tamariki not overly confident with verbal performance.

Please note, there is just one workshop per day limited to one class per session.


TJ and the Giant - with The Centre for Arts & Social Transformation (University of Auckland) and The Drama Workshop

TJ and the Giant

Age: Years 3-4 
Dates: April 8-10, 9.30am and 12.15pm
Duration: 90 mins
Cost: $8pp

An interactive theatre experience where ākonga are immersed in a story about a Giant who throws tantrums because he can't sleep at night. Tamariki will take on various roles, encounter characters, and navigate a way to help the Giant with a visual art and literacy-based ending. This programme has been designed specifically to help with leftover feelings from the effects of Cyclone Gabrielle.

Please note, there are only two workshops per day, limited to one class (30) per session.


Backstage Tour - with Toitoi

Age: Years 3-8
Dates: April 8-10, 9.30am, 10.30am, 12pm, and 1pm
Duration: 45 mins
Cost: $4pp

Backstage Tour

Try on stage make-up, audition for a part with a screen test, get dressed in costumes, work with the Toitoi tech team on lighting up the stage, and meet the director for your grand finale and to take a bow!


Creative Play - with Loose Enz

Age: All ages
Dates: April 8-10, 9.30am, 10.30am, 12pm, and 1pm
Duration: 50 mins
Cost: Free

Let your kids go loose with a playground of random parts and junk play resources! Their imaginations will soar as they build to create a world of their own. Connect, create, and celebrate with us and your students will see the positive impact of play on those around them.

Please note, one class per session.


 

Storyfort

Age: Kindy - Year 8
Dates: April 12, 9.30am, 10.30am, 12pm, and 1pm
Duration: 15 mins
Cost: Years 3-8, $4; Kindy-Year 2, free

Lift Off Festival Special Projects

Take Flight

Design-and-Make: Throughout Term 1 (at school)
Parade and Display: Thurs, April 11
Age: All ages
Dates: Parade - April 11, 9.30am-12pm; Display - April 13-19
Cost: Free

Take Flight is a schools design-and-make project, as part of the Festival, run throughout Term 1. This kaupapa sees students repurpose or recycle materials to create a set of wings. These will then be part of a parade on April 11, with guest artist Fifi Colston, then displayed in Toitoi's Cushing Foyer for our whole community to marvel at and admire during the Festival.

NZCYA Fifi Masher

Illustrator, author, and costume and props-maker, Fifi Colston.

One Day Arts Camp with Fifi Colston

Age: Years 6-8
Dates: April 10
Duration: Full day
Cost: $50pp

Schools are invited to select two students in Year 6-8 to attend a full-day creative workshop with illustrator, author, costumes and props-maker Fifi Colston. The day will see tamariki explore creative writing and urban sketching in a day of practical workshops, which includes entry to the Messy Magic Adventures show.

Fifi is a published junior fiction novelist, award-winning non-fiction author and a multi-World of Wearable Arts finalist. She has judged Te Matau-a-Māui's Edible Fashion Awards and will be the guest artist at the Wings Parade on April 11.
